TO PLAY JASS

A set of 36 cards

4 players

GAMEPLAY:

Players form two teams of two. The dealer distributes 9 cards to each player, three by three. The player who has the 7 of diamonds is the one who chooses the trump suit during the first deal and starts the game. For other deals, it will be the player to the right of the dealer who will choose. Partners from the same team can both announce the trump.

The player who has the lead then plays their first card, the one to their right will do the same and so on. Be careful, players must play a card of the same suit as the one who has the lead. They announce that they cannot follow if they don't have one and play a different card. A player can trump, in other words play a trump suit card while the player who had the lead started with another suit.

But if a player has already trumped, they are not allowed to undertrump, that is to say play a trump of lower value than the one previously played, unless they have no other cards.

A player who has the jack of trump is not obliged to play it, even if the base suit of the trick is trump and it's the only card of that suit left in their hand. The player who played the highest trump wins the trick for their team.

They collect it and the points that constitute it are immediately attributed to the team. They take the lead and play the first card of the following trick. When players have no more cards, the round ends. The team winning the last trick gets 5 additional points (Cinq de der). The player to the right of the current dealer becomes the new dealer for the next round.

At the end of each round, teams mark their number of points in a very particular way.

Point counting in Jass

The record is divided into two parts, one for each team. Points are written on 3 lines, as follows: the top line is composed of ticks each worth 100 points, the middle one

composed of crosses, a half-cross worth 50 points and a full cross 100 points, then the bottom line which is composed of 20-point ticks. Units are noted on the right by adding or subtracting them. It's easier to record points after each announcement than at the end of the round. Players thus add their points progressively.

THE WINNER IS:

The game ends when a team has scored 1000 points. Be careful if teammates announce 1000 points, but they were wrong, their opponent wins the game.
