TO PLAY JASS

A deck of 36 cards

4 players

GAME FLOW:

Players form two teams of two. The dealer distributes 9 cards to each player, three at a time. The player who holds the 7 of diamonds is the one who chooses the trump suit during the first deal and starts the game. For subsequent deals, the player to the dealer's right will choose. Partners on the same team can each announce the trump suit.

The player with the lead plays their first card, the player to their right does the same and so on. Be careful, players must play a card of the same suit as the one who has the lead. They announce that they cannot follow if they don't have one and play a different card. A player may trump, meaning playing a card of the trump suit when the player with the lead started with a different suit.

But if a player has already trumped, they are not allowed to undertrump, meaning playing a trump of lower value than one previously played, unless they have no other cards left.

A player who holds the trump jack is not obliged to play it, even if the base suit of the trick is trump and it is the only card of that suit remaining in their hand. The player who played either the highest trump wins the trick for their team.

They collect it and the points it contains are immediately credited to the team. They take the lead and play the first card of the next trick. When players have no more cards, the round ends. The team winning the last trick gets 5 additional points (Last trick bonus). The player to the right of the current dealer becomes the new dealer for the next round.

At the end of each round, the teams score their points in a very particular way.

Jass scoring

The scorecard is divided into two parts, one for each team. Points are recorded on 3 lines, as follows: the top line consists of tally marks each worth 100 points, the middle line

made up of crosses, a half-cross worth 50 points and a full cross 100 points, then the bottom line which consists of tally marks worth 20 points. Units are noted on the right by adding or subtracting them. It is easier to record points after each announcement than at the end of the round. Players add their points as they go.

THE WINNER IS:

The game ends when a team has scored 1,000 points. Be careful if teammates announce 1,000 points, but they made a mistake, their opponent wins the game.
