TO PLAY JASS
A set of 36 cards
4 players
GAME PROCEDURE:
Players form two teams of two. The dealer deals 9 cards to each player, three at a time. The player who has the 7 of diamonds is the one who chooses trump on the first deal and starts the game. For other deals, it will be the player to the right of the dealer who chooses. Partners on the same team can both announce trump.
The player who leads then plays his first card, the one to his right will do the same and so on. Be careful, players must play a card of the same suit as the one who leads. He announces that he cannot follow if he doesn't have one and plays a different card. A player can trump, in other words play a trump suit card when the leading player started with another suit.
But if a player has already trumped, he is not allowed to undertrump, that is to play a trump of lower value than the one previously played, unless he has no other cards left.
A player who has the jack of trump is not obliged to play it, even if the base suit of the trick is trump and it's the only card of that suit remaining in his hand. The player who played the highest trump wins the trick for his team.
He collects it and the points it contains are immediately awarded to the team. He takes the lead and plays the first card of the following trick. When players have no more cards, the round ends. The team winning the last trick gets 5 additional points (Last five). The player to the right of the current dealer becomes the new dealer for the next round.
At the end of each round, teams mark their number of points in a very particular way.
Point counting in Jass
The scorecard is divided into two parts, one for each team. Points are recorded on 3 lines, as follows: the top line consists of ticks each worth 100 points, the middle one
consists of crosses, a half-cross worth 50 points and a full cross 100 points, then the bottom line which consists of 20-point ticks. Units are noted on the right by adding or subtracting them. It's easier to record points after each announcement than at the end of the round. Players thus add their points progressively.
THE WINNER IS:
The game ends when a team has scored 1,000 points. Be careful: if teammates announce 1,000 points but they were wrong, their opponent wins the game.
