The Tactile Turn journey

At Relish, we're committed to promoting well-being at all stages of dementia. We reviewed our existing dementia products and noticed that we could offer more to people in advanced stages of dementia. We found that there were very few products on the market for this stage, and that what was available was not original - many products were not age-appropriate or desirable.

Creating a product during the pandemic was a challenge, but we shared our ideas with our network of caregivers, care homes and people with dementia. Their thoughts and ideas led to the creation of Tactile Turn. Our warmest thanks to all those who contributed!

About fidget toys and their benefits

A person can stay engaged with his or her environment by stimulating sensory perception, meaning that objects can stimulate all five senses and recall memories and emotions, with positive effects such as improved mood, self-esteem and well-being.

Other benefits of fidget toys include

  • They keep hands busy and relieve stress.
  • They provide safe fun and promote calm and relaxation.
  • They help combat boredom and loneliness.
  • They meet psychological needs.
  • People express themselves when they are unable to communicate in words.
  • Stimulation of brain pathways by stimulating thousands of nerve receptors in the fingers.
  • Focus on action rather than accomplishment.

How does Tactile Turn work?

Tactile Turn is relatively simple to use. It consists of an endless repetitive movement, turning the folds in all directions. There are two sides in three colors - blue, navy and yellow - to stimulate the visual and tactile senses. Suitable for intermediate and advanced stages of dementia.

Tactile Turn features and benefits

We've carefully designed the ideal fidget toy for people with dementia, so they can use it and experience a greater sense of joy. Its many advantages include

  • There's no right or wrong way to use it, allowing people to play as they wish.
  • It relies on two of the levers of the Relish wheel of well-being: "Finding calm" and "Staying active", which means it does more for less.
  • The heavy pillow provides comfort and reassurance thanks to its two distinct textures.
  • It features contrasting colors with a blue side, a navy side and a yellow side for greater variety.
  • It offers cognitive stimulation.

It's lightweight and just the right size - neither too big nor too small - and fits comfortably in the hand.
Unlike other toys, the Tactile Turn has a mature appearance, making it more attractive and appropriate for older people.
Invite someone with dementia to enjoy the pleasures of endless movement with the Tactile Turn. Available to buy on the site now.
